HIZZONER CONVERTS VOTERS IN E. HARLEM

Scores of East Harlem residents who roundly rejected Mayor Bloomberg in the last election said yesterday they’re ready to back the billionaire in his third bid for office.

“I think that I’ve seen major improvements in this community in the past couple of years in terms of safety and especially education,” said Tamara Davis, 36, an elementary-school teacher who did not vote for Bloomberg in 2005.

“I will definitely vote for him” if he runs again.

Davis was one of many residents in Assembly District 68 – which encompasses East Harlem – who told The Post they’re ready to pull the lever for the wildly popular mayor.

“I think he’s doing a great job. He’s exactly what we needed,” said Doris Gullette, 40.

Gullette was in the small minority of East Harlem voters who backed the then-Republican in his 2005 matchup against Fernando Ferrer.

Bloomberg garnered a mere 20 percent of the vote in the heavily Democratic district with a large Puerto Rican population.

He has since left the GOP and become an independent.

“I know people around here don’t like him very much. It’s because the changes he’s making are not affecting the bottom as quickly as the middle class,” said Gullette.

Mayra Alvarado said she never backed the billionaire mayor because she felt he couldn’t relate to issues facing average working folks.

“I’ve changed my mind because I’ve seen major improvements in many areas in Harlem residents’ lives, especially with what’s going on in the economy,” the school-bus driver said. “He’s the right guy to keep for the job.”
