Big biz opens hearts & wallets for Haiti

Donations to the relief effort in Haiti poured in from around the world yesterday, with corporations and individuals alike doing what they could to help.

Digicel, which runs cellphone networks in Haiti and elsewhere in the Caribbean, donated $5 million and Amgen, a biotech firm, $2 million.

Donations of at least $1 million were reported by several financial companies, including Goldman Sachs, Jefferies Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley.

Abbott Laboratories, Coca-Cola, Google, Pepsico and UPS pledged $1 million in donations, Nestlé Waters North America sent $1 million worth of bottled water, and the Yankees gave $500,000.

News Corp., which owns The Post, donated $250,000, to be divided between the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.

In addition, the company will match employee donations to several charities up to a total of $250,000, Chairman Rupert Murdoch said. The charities include Yele Haiti, the foundation set up by Haitian-born singer Wyclef Jean, Habitat for Humanity, the Real Medicine Foundation, UNICEF and Save the Children, as well as the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.
