A New Jersey man packing his car for a business trip was waylaid by a hungry black bear who knocked him unconscious and stole his Italian sub sandwich, police said yesterday.
Henry Rouwendal, 51, was in his Vernon, driveway last Friday putting bags in the trunk of his car last week when the bear knocked him to the ground — and grabbed the sandwich. When Rouwendal woke up nearly an hour later, the only thing left of his snack was the wrapper, some lettuce and a couple of tomato slices.
He suffered cuts and bruises.
“This is the first time I heard that a bear had contact with a human,” said Lt. Daniel Zill, a 27-year veteran.
