‘86 TROPHY IS LATEST METS LOSS

As if the Mets needed any more bad news, someone auctioned off a rare World Series trophy originally awarded to the team to commemorate its 1986 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Robert Edward Auctions got $32,313 from a South Korean collector in May for the trophy, believed to be one of three given to the Mets’ owners. The bidding opened at $10,000.

In recent days, as word of the sale spread on blogs, the team called the auction house to check on whether the trophy was the one formerly displayed in Shea Stadium’s Diamond Club, said auction director Dean Faragi. That trophy was supposed to have been placed in storage in preparation for Shea’s demolition.

The Mets were told that the wording on the auctioned-off trophy was different from the wording on the one from the Diamond Club.
