ART & COPY

WELCOME to the hit parade of ads, also known as “Art & Copy,” a lively but one-sided documentary by Doug Pray.

The movie traces the history of modern advertising, introducing us to some of the business’ creative types, who, naturally, have only good things to say about huckstering.

The interviews are interspersed with memorable broadcast ads. “I want my Maypo,” Mickey Mantle pleads. “I want my MTV,” intones Mick Jagger. Other noteworthy lines shout “Got milk?” and “Where’s the beef?”

But Pray conveniently doesn’t bring up less-creative, less-forthright spiels — such as the ones for over-the-counter meds and get-out-of-debt plans in which the very small type contradicts everything in the big type.

When all is said and done, “Art & Copy” is little more than an ad for advertising.

Running time: 90 minutes. Not rated (profanity). At the IFC Center, Sixth Avenue and Third Street.
