Jets want to fine-tune run game

When you’re 2-0 and feeling good about yourselves, you can afford to nit-pick.

Despite the fact the Jets are No. 7 overall in the NFL in rushing offense, they aren’t happy with their “ground and pound” running attack.

The Jets have rushed for 307 yards and a 4.2-yard average in two games, but their ground attack has been inconsistent, sputtering early in both the Houston and New England games before breaking some runs.

Monday, coach Rex Ryan delivered some mild criticism of the offensive line, saying players knew they hadn’t played their best against the Patriots.

“We plan on playing a heck of a game against Tennessee,” right tackle Damien Woody said.

That’ll be a challenge considering the Titans’ defense is ranked No. 1 against the run, having allowed a paltry 99 yards on 52 carries for a 1.9-yard average.

The Jets’ rushing attack is two-headed, with Thomas Jones having run for 161 yards and a 4.7-yard average and Leon Washington going to 118 and 4.1.

Neither cornerback Lito Sheppard (right quadriceps) nor CB Donald Strickland (right ankle) practiced yesterday.

Sheppard has a chance of playing, while Strickland definitely will not.

Besides those CBs, Ryan, seemingly mocking the NFL for the huge fine it levied on the Jets last week for not putting Brett Favre on the injury report last season, listed half the Jets roster yesterday.

None of them is considered serious enough to keep them out Sunday. One of them was Mark Sanchez, whom Ryan said “had a little tendinitis” in his right knee.

Sanchez participated fully in practice, but Ryan said, “We just added him [to the list].”

“Make sure he’s on that list — I don’t mean anything by that,” Ryan said, drawing some laughter. “It’s just a little thing, so we’re going to put him on there.”
