Letterman’s missus likes to sit backstage

Unlike other celeb families ensnared in sex scandals, don’t expect to see David Letterman’s enigmatic wife standing by his side.

But that’s not to say Regina Lasko will turn her back on the late-night icon, either.

The 48-year-old former “Late Night” writer, who is the mother of Letterman’s only child, has long remained behind the scenes in his life, preferring — like he does — to live a hermetic existence out of the limelight.

Lasko’s mother, Mary, who lives outside Cleveland, hinted yesterday there was no trouble at home following the disclosure that a CBS producer allegedly had tried to extort Letterman for sleeping with staffers in the years before his son Harry, now 5, was born.

“There is really nothing to say,” she said with a broad smile.

Although Letterman said the affair with Stephanie Birkett, which is at the heart of scandal, ended when Harry was born, it still overlapped with his 23-year relationship with Lasko. They finally married last March.

During most of their relationship, Letterman kept it a closely guarded secret. He rarely mentions his home life on his show or in his infrequent interviews.

“I had avoided getting married pretty good for, like, 23 years, and I secretly felt that men who were married admired me, like I was the last of the gunslingers,” he said shortly after his marriage.
