A spectacular wall of flames tears through the brush on Staten Island yesterday as firefighters battle a six-alarm blaze that spread to a residential block, damaging three homes and forcing the evacuation of 30 people.
The fast-moving blaze, fanned by winds sweeping in from Sandy Hook Bay, quickly consumed an empty field and spread to the Oakwood section shortly before 2 p.m.
“It looks like a bomb went off,” said Theresa Abella, 46, who joined neighbors along Milton Avenue using garden hoses to ward off the flames.
A vacant home on Kissam Avenue was destroyed and two other homes on the street were damaged. All of those evacuated returned to their homes last night.
