RADIO DAZE IN SUBWAY HIT

A city official hit by a No. 1 train could have been spared injury had the conductor and operator used their radios correctly, NYC Transit says.

Ronald Melichar, of the Department of Small Business Services, was hit after lying down on the tracks as the train neared the 137th Street-City College station on Jan. 4. He told investigators he was depressed.

The southbound train’s crew didn’t hear a call about a man on the tracks because the operator’s radio was turned off or the volume down — and the conductor’s radio was in her purse, according to an NYC Transit report.

Disciplinary actions are pending further review of the incident, transit officials said.
