WATT A SWITCH: LOWER CON ED BILLS EXPECTED

Lower energy prices likely will reduce monthly Con Ed electric bills this summer by $4 to $9 — savings that would be much greater without ratepayer tax increases approved by City Hall and Albany.

State utility regulators yesterday allowed Con Ed to extract an extra $721 million from its customers over the next year to pay for upkeep of its cables, transformers and other equipment, and to cover a 33 percent boost in city property taxes and a sixfold increase in the state’s tax on total utility revenues.

But in the end, customers likely will save this year thanks to a drop in the prices Con Ed pays electric-generating companies.

A New York City apartment dweller who uses 250 kilowatts of electricity will pay Con Ed about $70 this July, down $4 from last year.

Based on the same set of assumptions, an apartment dweller who uses 500 kilowatt hours of electricity will pay $127 this July, about $9 less than last year.
