SALES TAX HAUL IN BIG FREE FALL

State sales-tax collections across the nation recently suffered their most dramatic drop in 50 years — with further local revenue declines anticipated for the coming months, according to a report released yesterday.

Sales-tax revenues dropped 6.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008 nationally and 6.3 percent in New York state, compared to the same period a year earlier, the report found.
