SECOND LIFE

Thinking of sprucing up your home with a new toilet, better lighting or a spiffier kitchen? You can toss the old and buy new, green versions, but why not go even greener? Donate unwanted appliances, lights and building materials — and pick up salvaged or surplus ones — while saving money and helping the environment. Rebuilders Source (461 Timpson Place, The Bronx, 718-742-1111) offers steep discounts on everything for a DIY project: Gallons of paint are $5, boxes of 90 tiles start at $15, toilets go for as little as $25 and a current sale has all lighting priced at $5. There’s fancy stuff here, too: Custom cabinets salvaged from a penthouse and valued at $55,000 are selling for $10,000. Build It Green! NYC (3-17 26th Ave., Astoria, Queens, 718-777-0132) also deals with salvaged goods, but here you’ll spot many quirky castoffs — vintage signs (starting at $750), antique Mohonk Mountain House shutters ($30), a 1922 range and oven ($8,400) and a carriage used on “Gossip Girl” ($300) — alongside more common pieces. Both outlets offer pick-up service and donations are tax-deductible.
