NEW FRONT IN SCHOOLS WAR

State lawmakers are pushing a bill to loosen mayoral control of city schools by giving more sway over decisions to borough presidents, council members and parents.

The legislation would create borough education councils that would be consulted on major policy issues. The councils would include council members and be chaired by the borough president.

The presidents currently have appointees who serve on the citywide Panel on Education Policy.

The mayor and schools chancellor would also be subject to a 45-day community review process by district community education councils before making major policy decisions.

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Daniel Squadron (D-Brooklyn) and Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz (D-Bronx).

A spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg said, “We . . . won’t support any bill that weakens mayoral control and slows down the progress that we are making in our schools.”
