A-ROD AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Alex Rodriguez continued his light baseball workouts yesterday at the Yankees’ minor league complex in Tampa. Unlike the first two days, however, he did not come to Tropicana Field to watch batting practice, but he did sit in the dugout in the middle of the game. Rodriguez had physical therapy sessions scheduled for later in the day. He will begin batting practice soon, most likely over the weekend.

Rodriguez is ahead of schedule following hip surgery on March 9. The Yankees expect him back in mid-May, but if he continues to do well, he could be back as early as May 8 in Baltimore. The big test will come when he plays in extended spring games and has to do quick movements and slide.

“Breaking up the double play and things like that will really be the test,” Rodriguez said. kevin.kernan@nypost.com
