Jets coach still baffled by fake punt

A day later, Rex Ryan was shaking his head about the ill-fated Steve Weatherford fake punt the Jets’ loss to the Packers on Sunday.

“The two most shocked guys were me and [special teams coordinator Mike] Westhoff when he started running with it,” the head coach said yesterday. “The first thing I did was look at Westhoff and Westhoff is looking at me like, ‘Where did this come from?’ It’s funny but it’s not funny.”

Eric Smith, who blocks on punts, was as shocked as Ryan when the play unfolded.

“I heard the crowd yell and I thought it got blocked,” Smith said yesterday. “I turned around to look and then I saw Steve running. He surprised everybody. I heard the crowd yell and I didn’t know what happened. We just block it like normal and get out like we’re going to cover.

“It’s worked before, and it almost worked [Sunday]. It works well even if we don’t know it, because we’re all blocking like normal so [the opposing team] doesn’t think anything.”

Jim Leonhard didn’t second-guess the play, even though it led to a Green Bay field goal.

“Steve has a very good track record of making those plays work, [but] I’m sure he got an earful when it didn’t,” Leonhard said. “Obviously it didn’t work out. Weatherford wasn’t available in the locker room yesterday for comment.

Darrelle Revis
is hoping that his performance against the Packers will put a stop to questions about his hamstring.

“I feel 100 percent and I’m good,” the cornerback said.

Revis said the Packers were looking to test him Sunday, that he saw QB Aaron Rodgers
“smile or nod and I knew he was going to come to my side.”

Revis began the game playing the left side with Antonio Cromartie
on the right, but Revis ended up covering Greg Jennings
for most of the second half.
