Former President Bill Clinton did some campaigning – but not the kind you would expect.

Clinton phoned in to Pittsburgh’s 96.1 Kiss FM “Morning Freak Show” and revealed that he enjoys listening to hip-hop music and declared that jailed rapper Lil Wayne is “smart” and “has ability.”

“This guy’s smart, he’s got ability and he’s got a new chance now, and what I hope is not just something to brand him as a cool guy but that it will never happen again to him,” Clinton said on Tuesday when asked about Lil Wayne’s upcoming release from prison.

Clinton also said that people such as Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, do not simply get lucky and fall into the kind of success he has enjoyed as an entertainer.

“I think a lot of these people, they don’t get successful and that just like in any other area of life by being really dumb but they’re really smart.¤.¤.and what I hope will happen is he will have a good life now,” Clinton said.

The former president attributed his newfound taste in music to his daughter Chelsea, who introduced Bubba to rap and hip-hop after he made some comments that she thought were “really dumb.”

Clinton also discussed pressing topics such as the re-release of McDonald’s McRib and “The Jersey Shore” during his phone interview.

Lil Wayne’s latest album, “I Am Not A Human Being,” was released on September 27th, and peaked at No.1 on the Billboard 200 album list before falling to fifth this week.

There is no word yet on whether or not the former president has the MC’s latest album.
