Man in NY accused of impersonating cop, kidnapping DVD peddler

BOHEMIA, N.Y. — A man is accused of kidnapping a Queens DVD peddler and demanding ransom from his family while impersonating a police officer.

Daniel Levine was arraigned Sunday on charges of kidnapping, criminal impersonation, grand larceny and child endangerment.

Suffolk County police say Levine drove the victim around Saturday while negotiating ransom with the man’s family. At one point, police say, Levine stopped at a Long Island motel to pick up his wife and their 4-month-old son.

Police say Levine was arrested after being pulled over for a traffic infraction.

The man’s wife also was charged with kidnapping and child endangerment. The couple has no known address. It was not immediately known if they had retained a lawyer.

Police are investigating whether the late-model luxury car was theirs.
