Dwight Lowery will sit out the Jets’ game against the Houston Texans on Sunday with a concussion.
The backup defensive back was injured in the Jets’ 26-20 overtime win last Sunday at Cleveland, and coach Rex Ryan said Thursday that he has “a little ways to go there.”
Lowery is a major contributor on special teams, and the Jets might use starting cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie on the punt return unit to help offset his absence.
Wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery did not practice for the second straight day after suffering a slight tear to his left groin, but he did some light jogging on the field and on a water treadmill.
“Today was a good day for me,” Cotchery said.
Cotchery won’t rule out playing Sunday, and neither will Ryan. The wide receiver also knows he needs to be smart so he doesn’t make the injury worse, especially with two games in five days.
“I’m not going to pressure the coaches with that,” Cotchery said. “I’m going to let the coaches decide. I’m just going to continue to work hard.”
If Cotchery can’t play, it appears the Jets could sign wide receiver Patrick Turner from the practice squad. The team has an open spot on its roster after waiving defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert.
“I feel pretty good about Patrick Turner if we had to pull a guy up,” Ryan said.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez (bruised right calf) practiced fully and should be fine to play against the Texans.
Left guard Matt Slauson (right knee) and safety Eric Smith (ankle) were limited after not practicing Wednesday, but Ryan expects both to play. Defensive back Marquice Cole, who sat out last week with a strained left hamstring, did not practice.
