Meat your sweetie at Greenpoint Food Market

Few dispute that the way to a woman or a man’s heart is through his or her stomach.

Fortunately, the Greenpoint Food Market (Church of the Messiah, 129 Russell St.) had everyone covered for delicious Valentine’s Day delicacies that would last well beyond the holiday.

Or maybe not.

With caramels by Token Confections, chocolates by Molly’s Confections and Taza Chocolates, intricately delicate cookies by Sugarbuilt’s Amelia Coulter, there were more than enough sweets to snack on and even a few salty treats too, including DP Chutney Collective’s jars of chutney, kimchi from Arirang Kimchi, quinoa mix from iheartkeenwah, and even some Bacon Marmalade.

Vegetarians had plenty to pick from with vegan pate from Cobra Pate, pickles by Brooklyn Brine and Sourpuss Pickles, and seitan treats from Hale Seitan (yes, that’s a real company).

But the highlight, in both originality and taste, had to be the bags of jerky from Jersey City-based Slantshack Jerky, who sold chewy dried treats of turkey, beef, and pork in a dozen rubs and flavors.

Pierce Rowe, Czar of Jerky, and Josh Kace, the company’s president, explained that they were looking for vegetarian jerkies to make in upcoming markets, but nothing says “I love you” better than a heart-shaped piece of dried meat with a personalized card featuring messages such as “Be(ef) My Valentine!” and “Dear Valentine, From the moment we met, I knew I wanted to share a bag of jerky with you.”

The Greenpoint Food Market is held every other Saturday from 12 to 5 pm at The Church of the Messiah on 129 Russell St. For more information, visit http://greenpointfoodmarket.wordpress.com/.
