Smith, NBC agree

Veteran CBS anchor Harry Smith is jumping to NBC.

Smith, the former “Early Show” co-host who’s been with CBS for 25 years, will join Brian Williams on his as-yet-unnamed prime-time NBC newsmagazine, according to multiple reports.

NBC is expected to make the official announcement on Monday.

Smith, 59, was replaced on “The Early Show” last December when it revamped its format and brought in new anchors Chris Wragge and Erica Hill.

He remained at CBS, subbing on the “CBS Evening News.”

“Harry Smith has been a fixture here at CBS News for a generation . . . but today he’s decided to move on,” CBS News president David Rhodes told staffers in an internal e-mail yesterday.

Williams, who will remain as the anchor of the “NBC Nightly News,” is developing his prime-time show, targeted for the fall.
