K-Rod hiring Boras doesn’t faze Mets GM

Francisco Rodriguez’s future with the Mets may not be affected by his hiring of Scott Boras as his new agent, according to general manager Sandy Alderson.

“We’ll have to wait and see what kind of impact, if any, it has on the situation at this point,” Alderson said yesterday after Rodriguez officially switched to Boras from his former agent, Paul Kinzer. “There are no guarantees.”

Alderson said he had not talked to Boras about Rodriguez yet, but that will no doubt change soon.

Rodriguez has a limited, 10-team, no-trade clause in his contract and, with 42 appearances this season, is on pace to finish in excess of the 55 games he needs to cash in on the final year of his contract — worth $17.5 million.

Alderson said in San Francisco last weekend that it was not out of the question the Mets could hang on to Rodriguez and pay him next year, but it’s clear they will continue to explore other options since Alderson said previously he’d rather not pay a closer that amount of money.

Still, Alderson wasn’t willing to say the addition of Boras to the equation would make a potential deal more difficult as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

“It can create some complexity, but in other cases, it doesn’t make it any more complicated,” Alderson said. “We’ll have to see how this plays out.”

Alderson already figured to be in regular contact with Boras throughout the rest of the month, since Boras represents Carlos Beltran, perhaps the most likely player on the Mets’ roster to be dealt.

The Mets expect to know more today about David Wright’s rehab schedule. He could play in a game in Port St. Lucie as soon as tomorrow.
