Aussie actresses in the running for lead role in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ film: report

Australian actresses Sophie Lowe and Sarah Snook are rumored to be among the top contenders under consideration for a starring role in the U.S. film adaption of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the Daily Beast reported Wednesday.

American actress Rooney Mara and French star Lea Seydoux are also being considered for the role of Lisbeth Salander, the lead female character in the best selling mystery novel series by Stieg Larsson.

“Juno” actress Ellen Page and “Star Wars” starlet Natalie Portman were reportedly being considered as well but the two apparently have not made the final cut for the highly anticipated film.

British actor Daniel Craig has been cast as journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the film, set to be released in December 2011. Craig, 42, is expected to reprise the role in two additional films based on Larsson’s “Millennium Trilogy.”

All three Larsson books – “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl who Played with Fire” and “The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” – are international bestsellers.

Amazon said Tuesday that Larsson had sold over one million Kindle books, becoming the first member of the new “Kindle Million Club.” The club is reserved for authors whose books sold over one million copies in the Kindle ebook store.

The Swedish author died in 2004, shortly after delivering the manuscripts for his three books.
