Lindsay could be freed tonight

Lindsay may walk free in a few hours.

“Mean Girls” actress Lindsay Lohan tonight was preparing to stroll out of Los Angeles County jail after spending fewer than two weeks behind bars.

The 24-year-old Long Island native has been locked up since July 20, serving a 90-day sentence for violating terms of her probation stemming from two DUI arrests in 2007.

If set free tonight or early tomorrow, Lohan would have served less than a quarter of her sentence, which would be in line with other prisoners sent home early because of jail overcrowding.

After jail, the actress must directly report to a lock-down drug-rehab center — the Morningside Recovery detox facility in Newport Beach — to be in compliance with Judge Marsha Revel’s tough orders regarding her release.

Lohan had landed in hot water with Revel previously for failing to comply with her requirement to attend booze counseling once a week. The actress had chronically missed sessions and believed she would still be in compliance by attending multiple meetings during other weeks.

But Lohan really made the judge look bad in May when she blew off a scheduled court appearance while partying in France at events connected to the Cannes Film Festival. She claimed to have lost her passport.

She was supposed to get 24 hours to spend with family and friends after being released from jail and before having to report to rehab. But the judge last week ordered her straight to rehab.

At Morningside, patients follow a strict routine of counseling and curfews, although they’re sometimes allowed to enjoy everything from surfing to yoga during their down time.

While in rehab, the hard-partying star will be treated for bipolar disorder, which causes wild mood swings, and for an addiction, possibly to the prescription drug Adderall, reported the gossip Web site TMZ.

The site, quoting a source close to the case, added that opiates also are Lohan’s “drugs of choice.” Opiates are a derivative of opium and are generally downers.

Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, adamantly denied an earlier TMZ report that the actress was addicted to crystal meth.

“The report … is categorically false. It’s a fabrication, 100 percent,’’ Holley told another Web site, RadarOnline.

Lohan’s misadventures haven’t scared away those behind her next scheduled flick “Inferno,” a biopic of famed pioneering porn star Linda Lovelace. Producers said they’ll wait until Lohan gets out of rehab to begin filming.
