Nearly 200 New York City subway workers whose jobs were in limbo for months are handing in their badges and uniforms for good.
The 194 subway token booth employees were laid off on Friday.
A judge had prevented the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from closing more than 40 subway token booths and firing the workers in June. She said the transit agency needed to hold a new round of public hearings first.
The meetings took place in July. The MTA’s board voted to lay off the workers in an attempt to lessen a massive budget shortage.
The agency says it has cut nearly 3,500 jobs this year.
The Transport Workers Union says eliminating subway station workers makes the stations unsafe.
