Fantasia ‘aspirin overdose’ prompts 911 call

Former “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino read a court claim naming her as a home-wrecker just hours before she took an overdose in an apparent suicide attempt, prompting a 911 call from a friend looking for the singer to get medical help.

The incident — which the singer’s manager Brian Dickens confirmed involved her taking aspirin and a sleeping aid while feeling “overwhelmed” — was classified as a suicide bid in a police report, according to RadarOnline.com.

The 26-year-old was rushed to Mercy South Hospital in Pineville, N.C., shortly before 9:00pm Monday after swallowing the pills, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department report.

TMZ.com reported today that an unidentified friend told a 911 operator that Barrino was slowly losing consciousness and had placed into the shower in an effort to revive her.

The man said Barrino had ingested a “bottle of aspirin.”

The operator then told the caller to remove the singer from the shower and wait for an ambulance to arrive.

Her father, Joseph Barrino, told RadarOnline: “She’s doing fine” and the LA Times reported that VH1 executives behind the singer’s reality show “Fantasia For Real” issued a statement offering their support.

The second season of the show is in production and is scheduled to premiere on September 19.

The 2004 Idol champion was last week accused by North Carolina woman Paula Cook of having an affair with her husband, Antwaun Cook.

Cook, who named Barrino in court documents as she seeks custody of her children, also claimed the singer — who has a nine-year-old daughter — and Antwaun Cook “at times recorded their illicit sexual activity.”

Dickens said Barrino maintains some of the allegations in the complaint are “totally false”.

“Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused,” he said. “Yesterday, she was totally overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention.”

He said the singer was in love with Cook and believed that he was separated from his wife.

“Fantasia and Mr Cook dated on and off for about eleven months,” he said.

Also in the statement, released Tuesday, Dickens said Barrino’s injuries were not life-threatening and she would be released from hospital soon.

After the third season of “American Idol”, Barrino went on to have a successful recording and stage career.

She was nominated for four Grammys in 2006 and another three in 2008.

Barrino also had a successful run on Broadway starring as Miss Celie in the musical version of “The Color Purple.”
