CORTLAND — Tony Dungy will see for himself whether Rex Ryan is as profane as he looks on TV after accepting Ryan’s invitation to visit the Jets.

No date for Dungy’s visit has been set, and it will have to be at the Jets’ Florham Park, N.J., facility because training camp at SUNY-Cortland ended yesterday.

But Ryan said yesterday that the meetup is definitely set after the two had what Ryan described as a “man-to-man” phone conversation Wednesday.

The chat was in response to Dungy’s public criticism of Ryan for the number of F-bombs he was shown uttering in the first episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” last week.

A spokeswoman for Dungy told The Post yesterday that the retired Colts coach was on vacation with his family after an exhausting book tour and was not willing to comment on this latest turn in the Dungy-Ryan controversy.

Ryan had fired back at Dungy on Wednesday, saying Dungy had “unfairly judged me” over the profanity issue.

“I wanted him to know how I felt,” Ryan said yesterday when asked about the phone conversation. “We talked man-to-man. He told me his position, and I definitely told him my position. It was good.”

Ryan said he had never spoken to Dungy before yesterday’s telephone conversation.

“He’s excited to come out and see us and things like that, [and] we’re excited to see him,” Ryan said.

Ryan said Dungy, because of his personal unfamiliarity with the Jets’ boisterous boss, had spoken recently to several people in the profession close to Ryan who speak highly of him.

One person in the industry who knows both men — a person whom Ryan would not name — appeared to seal Dungy’s decision to get an up-close and personal look at how Ryan coaches the Jets.

“He knows some people that I know, and there’s a lot of positive things being said about me,” Ryan said. “I’m glad he asked that particular person about me. I’m looking forward to having him come up and seeing what we’re all about.”

Ryan also denied being emotional during his retort to Dungy on Wednesday, even though he gave off that distinct impression to several veteran Ryan watchers at the news conference.

“I was more emotional on this conversation than I was [Wednesday],” Ryan said.

Will Dungy’s visit finally put an end to a saga that still seems much ado about nothing?

“I sure hope so,” an AFC executive who knows both men said yesterday. “This has kind of gotten out of hand. I think Tony knows he went a little overboard, and this [visit] is a way to smooth things over.”
