Singing French doc’s praises

Jeanne Balibar is a talented French actress known for her work with Jacques Rivette and Olivier Assayas. She’s also, we discover in “Ne Change Rien,” a darn good singer.

The documentary, directed and shot by Pedro Costa, a cinephile hero from Portugal, consists of footage shot during musical rehearsals, recording sessions and live shows.

Costa — who says he was inspired by Jean-Luc Godard’s Rolling Stones homage “Sympathy for the Devil” (1970) — shows what visual wonders can be attained with a static camera and underlit black-and-white photography. (Who needs Imax and 3-D?)

Balibar’s dreamy voice (I’m reminded of Billie Holiday) is complemented by Costa’s hypnotic camera work. The result is a visual and aural delight.
