A little summer in the city

It’s almost June in January.

The city is having a winter heat wave, with high temperatures in the mid-50s today — and approaching 60 tomorrow.

A strong southwestern front is ushering in warm air from the Gulf of Mexico, according to forecasters.

And it isn’t as strange as it seems.

“It’s typical,” said AccuWeather meteorologist John Dlugoenski. “It seems that every January we have a thaw, a period of three or four days of very warm weather.”

It begins with a high around 55 degrees today. Patchy overnight fog tonight will make it feel damp but will give way to a great day tomorrow..

It may be the city’s first 60-degree day since Dec. 4. And tomorrow’s low temperature should be around 50.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

On Monday and Tuesday the thermometer dips to daytime highs in the low- and mid-40s, with a lot of rain.

“It will be a pretty good soaking,” Dlugoenski said.

And don’t pack away the overcoat just yet.

It’s going to be “drastically colder” by the end of the week, he said. Daytime highs are expected to be around freezing on Friday and Saturday. “We’ll be getting phone calls from people asking, “Why is it so cold?”
