Carl Edwards pulled away on a late start to snap a 70race winless streak yesterday, leading the final 78 laps on the 312mile race around Phoenix International Raceway. Jimmie Johnson finished second.

Danica Patrick was running 26th with just over 100 laps left when she blew a right front tire and slammed the right side of her car into a wall. She walked away uninjured.

Jozy Altidore broke Clint Dempsey’s record for most goals by an American in a European club season, scoring his 24th in AZ Alkmaar’s 21 loss at RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch Eridivisie. Dempsey scored 23 goals for Fulham last season, including 17 in the English Premier League.

BASEBALL: Cuba wins WBC opener

Cuba beat Brazil 5-2 yesterday in its first game of the World Baseball Classic. In other games, Taiwan (2-0) beat the Netherlands 8-3 and Japan (2-0) topped China 5-2. Japan next faces Cuba on Wednesday.

TENNIS: Gulbis takes Delray title

Ernests Gulbis beat Edouard RogerVasselin 76 (3), 63 for his second title at the Delray Beach (Fla.) International Championships. … Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic beat American Bethanie MattekSands 16, 75, 63 to win the Malaysian Open.

GOLF: Lewis wins in Singapore

Stacy Lewis won the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore, closing with a 1 under 71 for a oneshot victory over South Korea’s Na Yeon Choi.
