MSG eyes national net

Jimmy Dolan is looking to unleash yet another MSG sports network on the nation, The Post has learned.

The executive chairman of Madison Square Garden, which already owns regional sports networks MSG, MSG+ and MSG Varsity, among others, is weighing the rollout of a national cable channel called MSG National, sources said.

The new channel wouldn’t be able to offer Knicks or Rangers games — but would look to air behind-the-scenes-type series and what is called “shoulder programming,” which includes video shows on players or pre-game interviews.

MSG affiliate sales are already pitching the concept to distributors, sources said, though there is no launch date yet.

MSG National would ape a similar service from the YES Network, which operates YES National for non-New York-area-based fans of the Yankees.

MSG earns around $4.91 per subscriber, per month for two cable sports services, according to SNL Kagan statistics. Any new national service would likely be placed on an existing sports tier and command a few extra dimes.

“This is not something we’ll comment on at this time,” an MSG spokesman said.

MSG shares have soared 27 percent this year — and closed yesterday at $56.32 — on the strength, in part, of a reinvigorated media unit that benefitted from the Knicks returning to a full schedule after losing games and programming the prior year due to a lockout.
