Man struck by 1 train on Upper West Side

A man suffered trauma after he was hit by the subway this morning on the Upper West Side, authorities said.

He was hit by a downtown 1 train about 10:20 a.m. at the 86th Street subway station near Broadway, according to a transit spokesman.

A witness said the straphanger may have fallen while trying to cross between cars.

“That person slipped and fell,” said Debesh Barua, 39, a newsstand owner. “While they did their investigation, the train wasn’t operating for an hour and a half.”

“The south bound 1 was coming into the station and stopped about halfway in. It looked like it came to an abrupt stop. After a few minutes, I saw police and ambulances flood the station. I didn’t see anything because a police officer told me the accident happened inside the train”

Nearby commuters tweeted about “horrific screams,” and some seemed to think a woman had been hit.

Twitter user @AlexLoveNY posted, “There is a woman trapped under the downtown 1 @mtainsider train at 86th. I hope she makes it. Thoughts and prayers.”
