Giants have eyes on returner Cribbs

The Giants in 2012 learned they had one of the most dynamic kickoff returners in the NFL — running back David Wilson as a rookie set all sorts of franchise records as he averaged 26.9 yards on his 57 returns.

Wilson is scheduled to move in as the starting running back now that Ahmad Bradshaw is gone and as free agency has started up the Giants, according to reports out of Cleveland, have expressed interest in Josh Cribbs.

Cribbs, 29, has eight career returns for touchdowns and has averaged 25.9 yards in his career. He also is a receiver, though last season he caught just seven passes. His best year on offense was in 2011 with 41 receptions for 518 yards and four touchdowns.

Cribbs would no doubt fill a role that once belonged to Domenik Hixon, who is an unrestricted free agent. Hixon has been a No. 3 or No. 4 receiver and a return man, though mostly on punts. Cribbs also is an experienced punt returner.

According to reports out of Cleveland, Cribbs already has attracted interest from the 49ers, Cardinals, Cowboys and Patriots as well. The NFL is in a three-day legal tampering window, when teams can contact agents about players but cannot have contact with players, and no deals can be completed before 4 p.m. Tuesday.
