Go medieval!

The Dragon Lady is becoming a style icon. In HBO’s epic medieval fantasy “Game of Thrones,” the warrior princess who would be queen, Daenerys “Dany” Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), steals every scene with a look that screams femininity while emanating raw power. Soft flowing gowns, skirts and tops made with silk, butter suede and chiffon are offset by battle-worthy knee-high boots and tarnished metal jewelry.

It’s a look that evolved over three seasons, according to Emmy Award-winning costume designer Michele Clapton, who oversees 15 seamstresses who make “95 percent” of the series’ clothing from scratch in a Belfast, Northern Ireland, workroom. (The boots are handmade in Italy.) Workers can spend more than two weeks making a costume, and then another week “destroying” it with oil and dirt to make it look ancient and worn.

“Before now, Daenerys only wore things she was given,” says Clapton. “She was the orphan, the bullied sister, then a captured young woman. In Series 3, she comes into her own. She’s not a nomadic person anymore; she actually stays in one place.”

Clapton has created internal rules for the “Thrones” wardrobe. Rule

No. 1: Zippers don’t exist. Clothes and boots are tied or buckled. Rule

No. 2: If you’re raising three baby dragons, as Dany is, then it stands to reason that your clothes and jewelry will reflect your “children.” Rule

No. 3: Unless you’re by the sea, as Dany is now, you won’t be able to get raw materials such as hemp and linen.

The fashions may be mythical, but with a little creativity you can combine pieces from Etsy to Neiman Marcus to re-create her look in modern times.
