Snow way to play ball: Mets-Rockies postponed

DENVER — The odds were better of a sled race breaking out at Coors Field last night than a baseball game.

With the field covered by snow — which was expected to continue falling throughout the night — the Mets’ scheduled game against the Rockies was postponed. The teams are tentatively scheduled to play a split doubleheader today (3:10 p.m. and 8:40 p.m.).

But with snow also in the forecast for today there are doubts that both games of the doubleheader will be played.

“There is a front coming in [tonight] that is worse than this one,” manager Terry Collins said.

Dillon Gee is the Mets’ scheduled starter for Game 1, but Collins is undecided between Aaron Laffey and Jeremy Hefner for Game 2. The Rockies are scheduled to pitch Juan Nicasio and Jeff Francis in succession.

If today’s doubleheader gets wiped out the teams can try again tomorrow, when there is some clearing in the forecast. The series is scheduled to conclude on Thursday.

The Mets had their game in Minnesota on Sunday postponed by wintry conditions. That game is scheduled to be made up Aug. 19 at Target Field.

“It gets to be tough,” Collins said. “Because now your pitching is drastically affected along with your [rotation] down the line here a little bit.”

➤ Shaun Marcum (neck) is scheduled to pitch Thursday in a minor league game, but won’t be a candidate to start on Sunday against the Nationals, as the Mets had originally hoped. But Marcum’s first start could come on the next homestand if he gets through his minor league appearance without a setback.

➤ Collins said regardless of what happens with this series in Colorado, he probably will keep Matt Harvey slotted for Friday against the Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg.

Harvey was named NL Player of the Week after going 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in victories over the Phillies and Twins.
