New SST avoids sound & fury

Remember the Concorde? The supersonic transport plane that could get to Europe from Kennedy Airport in a mere 3 1/2 hours — but left an ear-shattering sonic boom in its wake?

NASA is testing a next-generation aircraft, dubbed “son of Concorde,” in a Cleveland wind tunnel to see if Boeing has solved the sound problem.

The new design has air inlets on the top of the model, in the hopes that by changing the airflow, man can fly faster than the speed of sound and not drive people on the ground crazy.

The first commercial SST Concorde was a bizarre-looking hook-nosed aircraft that was launched in 1976.

By the time it was retired in 2003, more than 2 million passengers had flown on it.
