Bronx AM fire kills mother, seriously injures mentally handicapped son

An elderly mom was killed in a Bronx blaze this morning, and her mentally handicapped son was seriously hurt, authorities said.

Neighbor Vin Luongo, 42, said his father heard the woman, 84, screaming for help after the fire started about 7:40 a.m. in the Country Club home on Ampere Avenue, near Ohm Avenue.

“…[She] had opened up the window, and she was yelling out for help,” Luongo said. “We could smell the fire and smoke from our house.”

Sixty firefighters battled the blaze, and extinguished it about 8:15 a.m.

“The flames were huge,” said one nearby resident who did not give her name. “I saw the black smoke pouring out of the house.”

EMS rushed her, as well as her 45-year-old son Michael, to Jacobi Hospital for treatment. She was pronounced dead at Jacobi, and her name was withheld pending family notification.

Neighbors said the victim’s husband was a retired carpenter who passed away a few years ago, they added.

She owned the home, and had lived in the neighborhood for almost twenty years.

“She was all for her family,” said Luongo. “She took care of her son Michael. They had their problems, but they couldn’t be nicer people…he would shake people’s hands and was super friendly.”

The fire started because of faulty wiring in the refridgerator.
