This week’s couple: Cat fight

There comes a point in a date where we start talking about the things we love — and we can’t stop going on and on about them. For Ashi, 24, that was her cats. Her date, Davin, 27, wanted to talk about his bees and beekeeping. So when they met for dinner at the Midtown East eatery Vitae they both came armed with stories and pictures about felines and hives. But were their passions interesting — or were they just one big buzz kill?

He said:

Ashi was half an hour late. When she came in, she was smiling, talking and kind of staring at me.

I was hesitant but I kept an open mind. I was expecting the conversation to open up a bit, but any new topic was a way for her to bring up cats. And she kept showing me pictures, so many pictures, of her cats.

Vitae was the highlight of the evening — fantastic food and outstanding service. I had the trout, and we shared desserts — so many delicious treats and perfectly paired sweet wines.

Ashi tried to get me to feed her dessert with linked elbows. I didn’t feel comfortable, but she insisted — I think she’s seen too many romance movies.

Ashi meant well, but she wanted a lot more out of this date than I did. She kept trying to not-so-subtly touch me. I’d rather not see her again.

She said:

When I got to Vitae, Davin was there, very straight-faced. He looked kind of mysterious!

Davin is a beekeeper, so I thought he would be interested in learning about my cats. We looked at pictures throughout the date. He seemed to be into it.

The service at Vitae was incredibly attentive. The servers kept bringing us treats, and gave us plenty of time to talk. We did that thing where we hooked our arms around each other’s elbow to share dessert. Davin didn’t seem into it at first, but when we got it right I caught a smile on his face. He was enjoying the night.

After dinner, we went to a party together, played some bar games and ended up at his apiary. I knew this was going to be more than just a first date.
