Girl, Interrupted 1999

Sunday, 3:30 p.m., WNYW

The account of real-life writer Susanna Kaysen’s (Winona Ryder) 18 months in a mental hospital where she became very comfortable living with sociopaths. It’s the performances that are outstanding here — especially in light of what happened to some of the then-unknown stars. Angelina Jolie won her first and only Oscar (Best Supporting Actress), Elisabeth Moss shines, and the tragic Brittany Murphy is so good it’s a heartbreaker.

Dog Day Afternoon 1975

Monday, 12:30 a.m., TCM

Personal favorite film that won only one Oscar, but was robbed of five more. Based on the true story of two down-on-their-luck schmos ( “Godfather” brothers Al Pacino and John Cazale) who rob a Brooklyn bank in 1972 so that the boyfriend of one of the thieves can get a sex change operation. Things go horribly wrong and they try to ransom hostages for freedom. By turns funny, tragic, and brilliant. Also starring Carol Kane and Charles Durning.

Gangs of New York 2002

Saturday, 11: 15 a.m., TCM

Martin Scorsese film about the 19th-century gang wars in New York’s Five Points neighborhood. Leonardo DiCaprio is Amsterdam Vallon, who seeks vengeance against Bill “The Butcher” Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis). For once, hammy Day-Lewis didn’t win a Best Acting Oscar for — again — making up a crazy accent and putting on a big hat — although he was nominated. With an improbable Cameron Diaz.

Flags of Our Fathers 2006

Saturday, 1:15 a.m.,TNT

The story of the men in the iconic photo of the GIs raising the flag at Iwo Jima. The three surviving soldiers — John “Doc” Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford) and Ira Hayes (Adam Beach) — are brought back to the States and become performing monkeys for the government, trying to sell war bonds to a war-weary country. Traumatized themselves, they can’t handle being singled out as heroes while their fellow soldiers who are still fighting are ignored.
