Mets offense sputters again, giving Harvey no run support vs. Pirates

It’s a lineup not even a mother could love.

Matt Harvey never flirted with perfection Sunday, but wasn’t going to receive any help from this floundering Mets offense, either. With Harvey merely ordinary and big hits missing from the likes of Ike Davis, David Wright and John Buck, the Mets fell 3-2 to the Pirates at Citi Field on Mother’s Day for a third straight loss.

The Mets (14-20) fell six games below .500 for the first time this season to complete a 2-4 homestand.

Harvey, who took a perfect game into the seventh inning against the White Sox on Tuesday, received a no-decision after allowing two runs over seven innings Sunday.

The Mets put the tying and go-ahead run on base in the eighth, but Davis struck out before Lucas Duda hit a grounder that struck first base and caromed high into the air. The ball was caught by second baseman Brandon Inge, who threw out Duda with pitcher Mark Melancon covering the bag.

Bobby Parnell was summoned with two outs in the eighth in a tie game and surrendered an RBI single to Pedro Alvarez that gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead. The run was charged to Scott Rice, who walked Andrew McCutchen with one out in the inning.

Harvey allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings for a third straight no-decision.

Mike Baxter’s bloop RBI single in the seventh tied it at 2-2, but Harvey’s shot at a win disappeared as reliever Justin Wilson struck out Juan Lagares and Justin Turner in succession to end the inning after Baxter had stolen second and third.

Davis went 0-for-4 and heard boos in the sixth after striking out against Wilson with the tying run on base. The boos grew louder with Davis’ strikeout in the eighth.

Clint Barmes homered leading off the third before Harvey surrendered a single to Travis Snider and walked McCutchen to load the bases.Garrett Jones’ sacrifice fly put the Mets in a 2-1 hole, but Harvey escaped further trouble by retiring Jordy Mercer.

Barmes’ homer was only the third hit against Harvey this season.

Duda homered leading off the second to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. The blast was Duda’s eighth of the season – second on the team to Buck’s 10.
