State Assemblyman William Boyland Jr pleads not guilty to corruption charge

Assemblyman William Boyland, Jr. pleaded not guilty today to yet another corruption charge leveled against him.

Brooklyn federal prosecutors indicted the Brooklyn Democrat on a new mail fraud count for allegedly funneling tax money to a non-profit, which then supposedly used the funds to pay for “Team Boyland” T-shirts and underwrite events showcasing Boyland’s community agenda.

To conceal this scheme, the feds say, Boyland directed staffers to have the non-profit doctor invoices and then send them to the New York State Office for the Aging — without informing the agency that the expenses “were for events and goods promoting” the legislator.

In total, Boyland now faces nearly two-dozen criminal counts in a political corruption case charging that he solicited more than $250,000 in bribes from people he thought were businessmen seeking his influence with development projects.

Earlier this year, his former chief of staff — Ryann Hermon — pleaded guilty to her own corruption charges and publicly accused Boyland of directing her to help peddle his influence for illicit cash payoffs.

Boyland promises to fight the case and recently hired a new defense attorney.
