Use data plan more, but pay carrier less

Are you constantly going over the limit of your cellphone’s data plan and then having to pay for the overages?

You might want to check out Onavo Extend, a mobile app that compresses your data, allowing you to do five times more with your phone on your current plan.

The app takes data you receive from the Internet and compresses it in Onavo’s cloud-based service. That compressed data is then sent to your mobile device.

Onavo claims its compacting service gives you access to a leaner, faster version of the Web and can save you up to 80 percent on your data usage.

The app compresses e-mails, reformatting them to plain text. In the process, the quality of images will be reduced.

However, Onavo Extend won’t shrink encrypted data, like log-in information to social networks or online banking services. And it also doesn’t compress streaming media.

Onavo Extend will only compress data that is received by your mobile device, not data you send, like photos or videos you upload.

And you can control just what data is compressed, by using settings incorporated into the app.

Onavo Extend also lets you see how much data is being consumed by each app, and it even provides monthly data-usage reports, so you can modify how you use your phone accordingly. You can even turn off the compression and just use it to see your data-usage breakdown.

Onavo Extend is free for the iPhone, iPad and certain Android-based mobile devices.
