Not a lot to Ike here

* Let me get this straight. The Mets’ brass is taking Zack Wheeler along very slowly, letting him gain confidence, work on his pitches and not throwing him into the deep end of the pool that is the New York media circus, yet day after day, they throw Ike Davis out there and we are forced to watch as he sinks deeper and deeper into oblivion, to the point he actually looks embarrassed to be on the field. This is the new Mets regime we fans have been pining for?

* The Mets are losing not just because of Ike Davis. An analysis of their play shows a glaring lack of smarts in much of their execution. Davis certainly deserves to be demoted to Las Vegas, but manager Terry Collins needs to get more out of what he has. It’s Memorial Day weekend and the Mets are 10 games under .500. That spells d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r for the remainder of the calendar.

* Some perspective on the Mets’ season: Through Friday, they had gotten three wins from their starting pitchers in their last 27 games. The 1919 White Sox got three wins from their starters in the World Series, and they were trying to lose!

Failure’s relative

* All the talk of the Knicks’ 54-win season as a “failure” is just stupid. Of course the fans are disappointed, but the fact that only one team can win the ultimate championship never makes all the others “losers” or “failures.” That’s like considering all the students who score a 799 or below on an SAT section “failures” just because one kid managed to score a perfect 800.

Power outrage

* In a column by Larry Brooks that ran in The Post on June 5, 2009 [“Making ’em power Rangers; Fixing man-up mess is Job One for Torts,” nypost.com] Rangers coach John Tortorella said in a phone conversation: “The power play starts with me. It’s on me to figure out how to make sure that the personnel on the power play succeeds; that falls on my shoulders.”

Tortorella still has much work to do if he’s going to improve a specialty unit that was a blight on the game last year in operating at 13.9 percent, a number that was essentially the same before and after Tom Renney’s dismissal with 20 games to go in 2009. If you can’t fix something in four years, it’s time to go.

Giant problems

* With the news Giants fullback Henry Hynoski is injured and possibly will miss part of the season as he heals, it’s time for general manager Jerry Reese to work his magic and get someone off the free agent list to fill the gap until they can get him back. Also, where the heck is Hakeem Nicks? He should be working with Eli Manning to get their timing down. One other thing: It’s getting old hearing Victor Cruz still has not finalized a deal. Put up or shut up, Victor. Sign him or trade him, Jerry.

Tale of 2 boroughs

* Will someone please remind the Yankees they are supposed to start playing like it’s 1965 again? They were supposed to be mired in last place by now, especially with all of the age and devastating injuries they’ve suffered thus far, yet they entered the weekend in first place. Brian Cashman has made all the right moves to keep the Yankees strong, but the Wilpons and Sandy Alderson have done nothing while another Mets season is wasted.
