UPS, FedEx late in delivering many Christmas packages

UPS was the Grinch that stole Christmas — failing to deliver many packages in time for the holiday despite retailers’ guarantees that they would arrive by Dec. 25.

“UPS apologizes to both shipping and receiving customers who may have delays,” the company said in a statement Thursday. “We expect all the delayed packages to be delivered today or tomorrow.”

FedEx didn’t fare much better, and frustrated customers slammed the company Thursday with tweets like, “Thank you FedEx for having my package just sit at a sorting facility for 3 days & not even attempting a delivery.”

A UPS driver delivering packages in Hudson Heights near the George Washington Bridge agreed that customers should be angry — but don’t blame the drivers.

“We’re very late with deliveries. There’s not enough manpower with guys taking off for the holidays,” the driver said.

A UPS driver making deliveries on the Upper East Side said lateness is nothing new. His company delivers Christmas gifts late every year, he said.

“This job feels like the worst job in the world around Christmas and New Year’s. There’s not enough drivers out here,” the driver said. “People are going to be pissed when I show up with Christmas stuff, but this happens every year. I’m used to it.”

A frustrated Upper East Side resident, Yara Thomas, 27, received a UPS delivery Thursday that she had expected to get by Christmas.

“I was hoping to have it by yesterday. So it’s a bit disappointing,” she said.

Amazon said Thursday it would give $20 gift cards to customers affected by the UPS and FedEx screw-ups.
