King of TV

Nearly 80 novels, novellas and short-story collections by Stephen King have been adapted for television and film. Three dozen big-screen films alone are based on his writing, including 1999’s Oscar-nominated “The Green Mile” and 2007’s “The Mist.”

Here are Nielsen’s five highest-rated TV miniseries based on his books. —  E.H.

“The Stand”

May 8-12, 1994, ABC

Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald starred in the miniseries; the four nights averaged 32.2 million viewers.

“The Tommyknockers”

May 9 and 10, 1993, ABC

The two-parter drew 24.4 million viewers.

“Bag of Bones”

Dec. 11 and 12, 2011, A&E

The two-part miniseries featured Pierce Brosnan and averaged 24.4 million viewers.

“The Shining”

April 27, 29 and May 1, 1997, ABC

Steven Weber and Rebecca De Mornay pulled in 18.8 million viewers.

“Storm of the Century”

Feb. 14, 15 and 18, 1999, ABC

Tim Daly starred in the miniseries, which averaged 19.2 million viewers.
