Syracuse’s Southerland to play in Summer League with 76ers, Warriors

James Southerland knew what he was doing after all.

The Queens native and former Syracuse star’s agent was approached by the Spurs during the second round of Thursday’s draft regarding whether he would be willing to play one season overseas if taken with the 58th overall pick, his high school coach Ron Naclerio said.

Southerland declined, to give himself more options, and went undrafted. But the 6-foot-8 sharpshooter received offers to play with 11 different teams in the upcoming NBA Summer League, and took two of them — the 76ers and Warriors — up on the invitation.

He will rejoin former Syracuse teammate Michael-Carter Williams with the 76ers in Orlando and play with the Warriors in Las Vegas.

Southerland, a former Cardozo High School star, got off to a rocky start at Syracuse, barely playing his first two seasons. He broke out as a junior after opting not to transfer and was a pivotal piece to the Orange’s run to the Final Four as a senior, despite missing six games after being declared academically ineligible.

Southerland broke the Big East Tournament record with 18 3-pointers to break Gerry McNamara’s record as Syracuse reached the finals in its final season in the conference, and he averaged 13.3 points and 5.2 rebounds during the season. He has been compared to Knicks marksman Steve Novak because of his length and touch from the perimeter.
