Sharks and tornadoes combine for latest SyFy gem, ‘Sharknado’

The tagline on the posters for “Sharknado,” SyFy’s latest dirt-cheap monster-disaster movie is simply, “Enough said.”

The awesomely awful movie, which premiered last night, follows an attack on Southern California by hundreds of flesh-hungry sharks, hurled into action by a tornado.

The flick stars Ian Ziering (“90210”) and Tara Reid (“American Pie”) in perhaps their greatest work yet — and the movie has been the talk of Twitter, thanks to its in-your-face simplicity and so-bad-it’s-good concept.

The masterpiece is the latest film from SyFy to grab headlines in the blogosphere, in part because of its self-serious take on the classic horror genre. The film is camp to the max, but the director’s refusal to address that is what has fans on the edge of their seats.

“I can’t believe that after seeing @PacificRim . . . I will be able to watch #Sharknado, too! It’s a great week for film, people,” snarked Twitter user @RachelHeine.

After the first character dies, at the none-too-subtle four-minute mark, “Sharknado” roars from one gory death to the next.

One scene includes a character looking into a flooded room full of shark guts and declaring, “Looks like it’s that time of the month.”

Sheesh.

This is why they invented cable TV.
