FORDHAM COACH HUNT HEATS UP

Fordham president, the Rev. Joseph O’Hare, is poised to begin interviewing candidates for the university’s vacant men’s basketball coaching position, sources told The Post.

Two sources told The Post that O’Hare has blocked out tomorrow and Thursday as interview days and that Wagner coach Dereck Whittenburg and former Notre Dame and North Carolina assistant coach Fred Quartlebaum have been contacted. Calls to Whittenburg, who led the Seahawks to their first NCAA Tournament appareance, and Quartlebaum, a Fordham alum, were not immediately returned.

One of the sources said that Maryland assistant Jimmy Patsos and Villanova assistant Fred Hill could expect to receive interviews and that Fairfield coach Tim O’Toole also might be in the mix. As of last night, however, O’Toole had yet to have any contact with Fordham.

Fordham is looking for an energetic coach with metropolitan area ties who can rebuild a program decimated by former coach Bob Hill. Fordham went 2-26 last season and if not for the work of assistant coach Mike Brown, whom the university has retained, the best returning players already would have transferred.
