Water back on in Hoboken after main breaks

The water is back on in Hoboken after twin main breaks dried up most of the city’s faucets.

A 12-inch main broke near the corner of Eighth Street and Willow Avenue around 3 a.m., cutting water service for many in the neighborhood in the middle of the city. Officials blamed fluctuating temperatures for that break.

At 10:40 a.m., a bigger, 30-inch main broke at the corner of 14th Street and Willow Avenue, a half-mile away.

Hoboken officials blamed the second break on a contractor working on a nearby construction project.

Service to the whole city was restored by around 5 p.m., said a spokesman for United Water, a private company that runs the water system in Hoboken and more than 100 other cities.

Permanent repairs weren’t expected to be completed until late tonight.
