GOMEZ HURTING AFTER SPILL

Garrett Gomez was taken to North Shore Hospital complaining of lower back pain after his mount, Westmoreland, dumped him stumbling badly several strides out of gate in third race.

FIFTH RACE: Lottie Zip, 6-5 favorite, and Sister Cat were dueling for lead, with 2-1 Queen’s Commander tracking in behind them when she broke down heading into far turn. Amazingly, she did not fall, as Cornelio Velasquez did fine job of keeping her on feet; 3-year-old filly, winner of five of previous eight starts, was vanned off with what was described as injury to left foreleg, prognosis unknown; she was claimed out of race by Dominic Galluscio. All Fired Up came from off pace under Raul Rojas to post upset at 18-1.

EIGHTH RACE: That’s not grass they’re running on, it’s green dirt, and hard as rock. Thru n’ Thru, 4-5 favorite shipping in from California for Bob Baffert with Javier Castellano subbing for Gomez, gunned to daylight lead, chased by Willshefire, then held off late run of Queen Amira, dashing six furlongs over inner turf course in snappy 1:08.13.
