‘DEVOTION’ XTRA SPECIAL

Going six furlongs on Belmont lawn in her last start, Kiaran McLaughlin’s Irish-bred 3-year-old filly Genuine Devotion whistled gate to wire by 4½ lengths. In yesterday’s $100,000 Xtra Heat grass dash, she did it again, cruising to front under Alan Garcia, opening daylight down stretch, coasting home by 23/4 lengths at 5-2. Trouble Maker rallied from last of five to run past Stormy Kiss late for second. Society Hostess, 8-5 favorite making her first start since Jan. 1, finished fourth.

In $75,000 Chelsey Flower at mile-and-eighth on turf, 5-2 favorite Miracle Moment ran off to lengthy early lead under Cornelio Velasquez. But cavalry closed in turning for home, with Shapira, Bill Mott’s Chilean-bred 4-year-old filly, 8-1 under Eddie Castro, clawing past Miracle Moment in mid-stretch, then digging in to come again for nose victory after being headed by 3-1 Calla Lily rallying up rail under Javier Castellano.

THIRD RACE: Brooklyn Boy, French import making first U.S. start for Allen Jerkens at 2-1, stumbled at start, rushed up rail under Jorge Chavez to set pace, pressed by Blue Sky God and Jamaican Kev, with Roi Maudit, 2-1 favorite under John Velazquez after breaking maiden last out by 4½ lengths in 1:09, sitting perfect trip stalking dueling leaders. As Brooklyn Boy dropped out of it around turn, Roi Maudit cruised up outside, bid for lead mid-stretch, drew clear in 1:08.4.

FOURTH RACE: Bombs away! David’s Skye, N.Y.-bred 3-year-old filly based at Finger Lakes, where she broke maiden gate-to-wire last out vs. open company at 4-5 by 5½ lengths, was dismissed at 33-1 trying turf for first time in state-bred allowance field going six furlongs. She gunned to front while still well in hand under apprentice Jermaine Bridgmohan, galloped along loose on lead, kicked away top of stretch, cruised home. Positive Charge, 22-1 under Jose Espinoza, chased pace while hugging rail, completed the $825 exacta.

FIFTH RACE: Sew Slippery, 7-2, went to front early under Eibar Coa, then took back as All the Rightnotes and Nicole Cat dueled for lead. Down stretch, Sew Slippery was trapped in behind those two, but she split horses with bold run to take lead, draw off through final furlong, setting off raucous celebration by some fans in grandstand. Peleliu, hammered to 4-5 in her debut for Wesley Ward, was nowhere to be found.
